Which historical event do you think most affected the weakening of the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages: Martin Luther's Ninety Five Theses, the Great Schism, or the development of states in which monarchs had more power than popes?

I think the one that had more effect on the weakening on the catholic church was the great schism. To me the great schism got the people mad because the the popes turned to French popes and their were two popes and the people were confused and they got mad and that was the reason for the weakening

I would choose the Great Schism for the effect of the weakening of the church. I would choose this because the way the popes were fighting for control over the church was absurd. All they really wanted was power and control.

uuummm........i think one of the greatest weakening was when they asked the church to pat for there sins no would want to do that especially when you know other ways to for give your sins and if you where to read the bible no where in there says to pay money for your sins. Theres other ways to do that. which is the 95 theses.

Well Ms.Redford, what Marilyn and I think is that people thats worked in the churched believed that you had to pay to get your sins forgiven which isn't true, people didn't believe that was the way to handle stuff. But people didn't want to go down into the underworld so they just went along with it,until somebody stood up for what they believe in and that was Martin Luther,he thought it was wrong so he wrote the 95 theses on a printing press that explained how wring it is ..He used quotes from the bible and no where did it say "IN ORDER FRO ME TO FORGIVE YOUR SINS YOU HAVE TO PAY" and people were glad because they didn't either. This is what Marilyn think =]

I THINK THE GREAT SCHISM AFFECTED THE CATHOLIC CHURCH THE MOST. BECAUSE OF THE 2 POPES PEOPLE WERE CONFUSED AND DIDN'T KNOW WHO TO GO WITH OR WHO TO LISTEN TO, THEN THE POPES BECAME FRENCH POPES AND HAD TO PAY TAXES AND DIDN'T WANT TO. THEY HAD STRUGGLES WITH THE CHURCH.

The weakening of the catholic church was many events. The first event of the weakening of the church was that Martin Luther's ninety-five theses was posted on the churches door and the priest was mad at him. The people of the town was happy of him that he had posted on the doors. The other event was that countries was starting to form and kings had more power then the popes. The last event was that people were confused on who were the leaders and like there were two popes a French and a Italian popes. Since then they had a big conflict and they decided to leave it as it was before.

The reason why the Catholic Church weakened during the Middle Ages was because of the Great Schism. They moved the government and had two Popes. This caused great confusion to the people because they did not know which Pope to follow. That is why we think the Catholic Church weakened during the Middle Ages.

well i think that Martin Luther King ninety five reasons effected the weakening in the Catholic Church because, when he said that the catholic church was doing things that god didn't say to do.Thats what caused the weakening of the catholic church.

I think the popes because in the thirteen hundreds, the growth of national states weakened the power of the church. Some monarchs grew powerful enough to force the church to support their policies. In 1305,the french king used his political power to have clement V elected pope. Finally, Two years later , the pope moved the center of the church to Avignon. Most of the popes were french.<3

The most affective thing that split up the catholic church was that there was two popes also that the pope and king had to fight for power and member of the church had to pay to forgive their sins.

I think that the Great Schism affected the church more because people were confused and didn't know were to go. They were confused and didn't know were to go because if they didn't go with one they would be excommunicated. Some were with the Pope at Italy, some with the Pope at Rome, and some probably stopped going. Then when there was one Pope the church was already weakened.
